🚨 What is a blitz?

A blitz sends more rushers than the offense has blockers — creating free paths to the QB. The defense gambles: if the blitz isn't picked up, it's a sack. If it is, big play for the offense.

A-Gap Blitz

Linebacker or safety blitzes through the A-gap (between center and guard). Fastest path to QB.

⚡ Counter: Quick slant or hot route — RB chips the blitzer.

Edge Blitz

Extra rusher off the edge — usually a linebacker or safety.

⚡ Counter: RB or TE stays in to chip. QB throws quick out routes.

Corner Blitz

A cornerback blitzes off the edge — leaves a receiver one-on-one with a safety.

⚡ Counter: Throw the quick fade to the vacated cornerback's spot.

Zone Blitz

Rushers drop into coverage while unexpected players rush. Dick LeBeau's specialty.

⚡ Counter: Hard to read. QB must feel pressure and find open zone hole quickly.

All-Out Blitz (Cover 0)

Everyone blitzes, no deep help. High risk, high reward.

⚡ Counter: Every route must be a hot route. QB MUST throw fast. Deep throws can be huge.

💡 The Center's Job

The center is the "quarterback of the O-line." He identifies the Mike linebacker, calls out blitz threats, and sets the protection scheme before every snap. Centers like Jeff Saturday and Jason Kelce are valued as much for their intelligence as their blocking.
