Football terminology from A to Z
Audible
When the QB changes the play at the line of scrimmage based on what the defense shows.
Blitz
When extra defenders rush the QB beyond the normal pass rush, hoping to get a sack.
Chain Crew
Officials on the sideline who measure first downs using a 10-yard chain.
Down
One of four attempts the offense has to advance 10 yards.
End Zone
The 10-yard area at each end of the field where touchdowns are scored.
Fair Catch
A punt returner signals (waving hand) that they won't run, and can't be hit.
Gridiron
A nickname for the football field, due to its grid-like yard line markings.
Hail Mary
A desperate long pass thrown toward the end zone, usually at the end of a half.
Interception
When a defensive player catches a pass intended for an offensive player.
Juke
A quick, deceptive move by a ball carrier to avoid a tackler.
Kickoff
A kick at the start of each half and after each score to give the ball to the other team.
Line of Scrimmage
The imaginary line where the ball is placed before each play begins.
Man Coverage
A defensive scheme where each defender is assigned to cover a specific offensive player.
Neutral Zone
The space between the offense and defense, defined by the length of the football.
Onside Kick
A short kickoff attempt to recover the ball, usually used when trailing late.
Play Action
When the QB fakes a handoff to a running back to trick the defense before throwing.
Quarterback Sneak
The QB takes the snap and immediately pushes forward for a short gain.
Red Zone
The area from the 20-yard line to the end zone. Scoring territory!
Sack
When the QB is tackled behind the line of scrimmage while trying to throw.
Touchback
When the ball is downed in the end zone on a kick, placed at the 25-yard line.
Under Center
When the QB lines up directly behind the Center to take the snap.
Victory Formation
The QB kneels immediately after the snap to run out the clock.
Wild Card
The first round of the NFL playoffs, where non-division winners compete.
Zone Coverage
A defensive scheme where defenders cover areas of the field rather than specific players.
