Offensive Line
Zone vs man blocking β how the trenches work
Zone Blocking
Linemen block areas, not people
In zone blocking, each offensive lineman is responsible for a zone/area of the field β not a specific defender. They move laterally and block whoever enters their zone.
How it works:
- 1All linemen step in the same direction (the play side)
- 2Each lineman takes the defender in their zone
- 3If no defender enters their zone, they climb to the next level (linebackers)
- 4Running back reads the blocks and cuts to the open lane
β Pros
- β’ Great for athletic, mobile linemen
- β’ Creates natural cutback lanes
- β’ Easier to teach consistent technique
- β’ Works well with speed backs
β Cons
- β’ RB must have patience and vision
- β’ Inside zone can be stuffed at the point of attack
- β’ Less effective vs heavy front 7s
