How the run fake opens up the passing game

🎭 What is Play Action?

Play action (PA) is when the quarterback fakes a handoff to the running back before dropping back to throw. The goal is to freeze linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake — opening receivers deep downfield.

💡 The offense looks exactly like a run play until the QB pulls the ball back.

⚡ The Golden Rule

Play action only works if you've established the run. If a team runs for 2 yards a carry all game, defenses won't bite on the fake. The threat of the run is what makes the pass work.
