QB Progressions
How QBs process defenses and find open receivers
1️⃣ 1-2-3 Read System
The classic progression: QB has a predetermined 1st, 2nd, and 3rd read. Works through them in order based on coverage.
1st
Primary read — usually the matchup the play was designed to attack. Throw here if open.
2nd
If #1 is covered, check here. Often a complementary route on the same side.
3rd
Checkdown — usually the RB or TE on a safety valve route. Always open for short gain.
Scramble
If all receivers are covered, QB uses his feet. Take what the defense gives.
⚡ The Elite QB Trait
Elite QBs process information in under 2 seconds. Mahomes, Brady, and Manning all have or had the ability to go through their entire progression before the pass rush arrives. Pre-snap IQ is just as important as arm talent.
