Why the actual distance is longer than the yard line suggests
The Real Story:
When you see "30-yard field goal attempt," it doesn't mean the kicker is kicking from 30 yards away. The offense has the ball at the 30-yard line, but the kicker stands 7+ yards behind the line of scrimmage. This means a "30-yard" field goal is actually 47+ yards of actual kicking distance!
💡 Pro Tip:
This is why kickers are graded by their actual kicking distance (47-yard FG, 55-yard FG), not the yard line position. A "30-yard" field goal is really a 47-yard kick!
