Preseason
August
4 games that don't count in the standings. Teams test depth players, new schemes, and evaluate rookies. Starters rarely play more than a quarter.
Key: Rosters get trimmed from 90 to 53 players by final cutdown day.
Regular Season
Sept – Jan
18 weeks, 17 games per team. Every game matters — one loss can cost a playoff spot. Teams compete within their division (4 teams each) and across conferences.
Key: There are 32 teams split into the NFC and AFC, each with 4 divisions of 4 teams.
Wild Card Weekend
January
The first round of the playoffs. 14 teams qualify: the top team in each division (4 per conference) plus 3 'wild card' teams with the best records. The top seed in each conference gets a bye (week off).
Key: Wild card teams are the best teams who didn't win their division.
Divisional Round
January
8 teams remain. The top 2 seeds (who had byes) enter the tournament here, hosting games at home. Single elimination — lose and your season is over.
Key: Home field advantage is massive here — teams fight all season to earn it.
Conference Championships
January
4 teams left — 2 in each conference (NFC and AFC). The winners earn the right to go to the Super Bowl. These games are often the most exciting of the season.
Key: NFC Champion vs. AFC Champion in the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl
February
The biggest single-game sporting event in the world. Played at a neutral site. The two conference champions face off for the Lombardi Trophy. Watched by 100+ million people in the US alone.
Key: The halftime show and commercials are as big a cultural event as the game itself.
NFL Draft
April
Teams select college players to join their rosters. 7 rounds, 32 picks per round (with trades). Teams pick in reverse order of their record — worst team picks first. The draft is a massive rebuilding tool.
Key: The #1 overall pick is the most coveted slot. Teams trade multiple picks to move up for a franchise QB.
Free Agency
March
Players whose contracts expired can sign with any team. Teams use the salary cap to compete for top players. Big signings reshape rosters and fan expectations overnight.
Key: Salary cap limits how much teams can spend — smart teams build efficiently through the draft and smart signings.
