3rd & Short (1β2)
The QB sneak is the most efficient play in football. Teams convert 3rd & 1 via QB sneak at ~80%+. Every defense knows it's coming. It doesn't matter.
Why the QB sneak dominates:
The center snap creates a natural surge of momentum toward the defense. The QB follows that surge, pressing the ball forward with every ounce of leverage. The two guards block inward to create a pinch. Against this, the defense needs perfect gap integrity from every player on the field simultaneously.
The counter argument for running back:
Some teams prefer a running back dive to preserve the QB from hits. The conversion rate drops to roughly 60β65%. The math favors the QB sneak unless the QB is injury-prone.
Play action from short yardage:
When a team has successfully converted short-yardage run situations multiple times, the play-action pass from the same formation becomes extremely dangerous. The linebacker who steps up to stop the run is fully out of his zone.
