Zone Holes

Find the soft spots in every coverage shell

Flat Zone

The flat is the area near the sideline, behind the linebackers. When corners take receivers deep, the flat opens up. Running backs and tight ends find easy yards here.

Curl-Flat Zone

The seam between the flat and hook zones. When the linebacker drops to the hook, the flat opens. When he takes the flat, the curl opens. QB reads him.

Seam Zone

The vertical middle of the field between safeties in Cover 2. In Cover 2, safeties take the deep halves — the seam between them is a vertical open window.

Hook Zone

The area 10-15 yards over the middle, behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties. Crossing routes and in-routes find this zone in Cover 3.

Deep Middle

In Cover 2, both safeties have half the field. The deep middle between them is vulnerable to posts. In Cover 3, the deep middle safety covers it.

🧠 The QB's Mental Map

Elite QBs don't just read one defender — they see the entire coverage shell and know pre-snap where the holes will be based on the coverage identified. Mahomes, Rogers, and Brady could identify coverage before the snap and exploit the weakness before the ball was even snapped.
